Leadership, Leadership, Leadership!

There is an abundant and constant flow of information on leadership in the form of books and articles including material on leadership development and best practices.

Leadership can be defined as a unique form of behavior that results from the integration of, among other things, attitude, knowledge and experience. That being said, what can you do if you want to develop and use your full leadership potential?

Having more than 25 years of practice and experience under my belt, I can share with you 2 winning strategies to have more impact as a leader.

1. Know Yourself

Leadership often starts by having a good sense of self-awareness. It’s important to identify the personality traits and skills that will allow us to influence and inspire others. To help gain this knowledge, ask for feedback, use psychometric tests or participate in a 360 ° survey. When we know ourselves well, we can focus on our talents and manage our weak points. Good leaders use their strengths and surround themselves with people who have complementary skills.

2. Develop Yourself

The next step, in my opinion, is to learn to learn better. Think about different learning styles that could help you identify how you and your team learn best. Use all possible methods to stay current and agile: webinars, readings, training, co-development, mentoring, coaching, videos and so on.

Also, always think about perfecting your communication skills: verbal, written, listening and body language. Your ability to communicate effectively will greatly improve your impact, persuasion and interpersonal skills.

In summary, an exceptional leader is one who recognizes the importance of self-development, as well as the development of team members. This is not only a mark of recognition, but it also leads to excellence and success.

Dr. Ken Blanchard, in his book “The Heart of A Leader” had this to say about good leaders; “If you want to know why your people are not performing well, step up to the mirror and take a peek.”
